Trust me, none of that would have been remotely possible. Huston does a great job of introducing the reader to Hank and his world in an economical, yet rounded and somewhat self-depreciating fashion, and in constructing an action filled, yet strangely credible, plot. It’s just the beginning. Past tense is always a better choice because it gives the reader the feel that the events of the story chaflie really have happened. I bought this when it yuston came out, but quickly put it aside.
Hank Thompson still remains one of my favorite characters of all time.

I hadn’t recalled that Caught Stealing was Huston’s debut novel. The protagonist, a bartender, is beaten one night for unknown reasons by two guys who are obviously Russian Mob. Black guys wearing cowboy gear! Still, Hank gamely keeps trying, even when the curveballs come fast and loose.
Returning from the laundromat, he sees the thugs that beat him having a staeling across the street from his place. Kojima confirmed that he and Kojima Productions wanted to go in what they’d call in the business “a different direction” this time out, although at this time he wouldn’t divulge the name of the actor voicing the character in the game.

I read this in under twenty four hours if that tells you anything. Talk about a thrill ride! I actually recommend the second book over this one; you get a summary of the events minus the pages of gratuitous bloody cgarlie, and Hank develops into an interesting character instead of the one-dimensional wrong-place-wrong-time guy that he essentially is here. Afterward, he moves across the country and starts over. I recently finished the second book, “Six Bad Things Be warned: This biography of a living person needs additional citations for verification.
