Even for the norms of the time, which were notoriously lax about this sort of thing, and a publication date perilously close to the Dreyfus affair, this book has a Furthermore, du Maurier seems to believe that possessing Jewish blood gives one an advantage. I was intrigued to find out if I could identify anything that would have been of interest to a serial killer. Instead, the accolade arguably goes to a man who was principally known, not as a novelist at all, but as a cartoonist.

The novel is full of it, and when attitudes to Jewish people began to change in Europe during the twentieth century, especially after the horrors of the Holocaust, a novel like Trilby suddenly seemed strikingly, even abhorrently outdated in its casual racism.

My favourite moment of that Antisemitism was when the villain – a Jew to end all Jews, of course, although not religious, unwashed and naturally cowardly – noticing the hero all alone and dejected and “being an Oriental Israelite Hebrew Jew, could mauriee help but spit at him. Alas at one performance he is incapacitated and as Trilby tries to sing, but cannot – to the disgust of the audience — she is in a strange situation where she is aware of her life with Svengali but has no conception at all of her singing career.
After studying abroad in Paris and traveling throughout Europe as a student, this book just hits so many spots.

A note to current authors: First, a past bestseller can show us what life was like back then — better, I think, than can some classic from the same period, which often draws us more to itself as a bookfor its genius, than to an involvement with the period it describes.
