It is based on the play of almost the same name by Ariano Suassunawith elements of some other of Suassuna’s plays, The Ghost and the Sowand Torture of a Heart. I haven’t seen the subtitles, but it would be very hard to translate and keep the comedy intact, suxssuna it is worth seeing it.

It’s a movie that, at the same time, is a comedy and a drama. He is also an important regional writer doing various novels set in the Northeast of Brazil. It deserves to be better known worldwide if only for the performances without exception but requires, to some extent, a specifically Brazilian sense of context for its sympathetic appreciation. There the fate of the main characters is mercifully arbitrated by in a court-room contest between Satan and a black Jesus, with the Virgin Mary Fernanda Montenegro interceding as the Virgin in keeping coompadecida her prayer-book promise.
