And now comes the worst: When they arrive, Thirrin is overjoyed. Things that don’t quite fit within the context of the story. Oskan is a good teenage wizard who is the son of the famous Icemarkk Witch named Annis if I’m not mistaken. Battle scenes are really good – the descriptions are very clear, and give you a great mental image, which is unique. No one stands up to her and she came off as more of a huge bully than a young leader of a nation. After King Redrought sacrifices his entire army to stop the invasion, Thirrin, his daughter, is left alone to save the nation.

I was stunned to learn Stuart Hill had written more I look forward to the reading the other books in this series. Hill’s writing is never over-earnest.

I felt there was this nice mingling of seriousness and urgency as well as humour. Out with some friends for lunch, spent all my money and only a few twenties left, I saw The Cry of the Icemark in a bookstore and after a icemrak glance at the blurb I simply had to have it.

And, once again, he hasn’t let us down. She was born to be a queen, and she showed a multi-facetedness to her character that brought her to vivid life. The Allies join in to protect the young queen. Sometimes the dangerous action, especially in the early chapters, came out of nowhere and didn’t seem plausible. Some of the parallels made me groan, but not for long.

Its king has been killed in battle, its enemy lies in wait, and its fate rests on the shoulders of Thirrin Freer Strong-in-the-Arm Lindenshield, a beautiful princess and an intrepid warrior, who must find a way to protect her land from a terrible invasion. ULtimately, I stuck it out through the book for Icemmark and Oskan, who were by far the most dynamic characters.

Add to it sufficiently original werewolves and vampires – all this looks quite well. The plot moves from one predictable event to another, and the characters are characterless tne on a chessboard with a set game. It was supposed to be climactic I think, but we were tired of reading about war preparations!

The Icemark Chronicles 1. And I love the Hypolitan women and their society in which the roles between men and women are completely reversed! It it within pages of the start of the book that the hero faces her first challenge and from that moment on she never stops. I’m delighted to report, however, that it was well worth the muscle strain. Hill draws freely on Norse, Roman, Greek, Anglo-Saxon, Wicca and, no doubt, other mythologies and, seemingly effortlessly, weaves them together into a surprisingly believable unbelievable world.

It was definitely a five star listen for this reader.

I really struggled through this one. Feb 02, Icfmark rated it it was ok Shelves: Hill writes delightful fighting scenes with great detail, and he also carefully develops his characters. To top it all off, this author writes with icemagk verbal capacity of a year-old emulating Tolkien and manages to make even battle scenes tedious and boring. I icmeark it two chances and the last one stopped like on page 50, because damn, I was like “Maybe it will get better”.

The characters are flat, bland, entirely undeveloped and unoriginal, and half of them can’t seem to decide what sort of overall voice they will have in the entire book. Here’s a man who seems to know a good children’s book when he reads one.
