It’s definitely not a real “history of Iberia,” or of Spain.
T There, I’ve finally read my first Michener book, if at an advanced age. Eventually, it is a good book anyone can enjoy it.
There is even a long conversation with friends of Hemingway about Papa. I loved this intimate read.
Wild, contradictory, passionately beautiful, this is Spain as experienced by a master writer. Every tourist looks for something that is unique to the area mchener are visiting.

Mar 13, Rick rated it really liked it Shelves: The body was never found. Another great book by Michener. At this time, this book would be iberai interest to those who have an interest in Spain and its history. So, you might ask, why should I bother to read an out-of-date book like this?
His books are LONG, but so complete and filled with fascinating details. And what a picture! Seriously, you read his accounts, his description of the bravery and the drama, it’s hard to raise an argument, especially in the context of Spanish machismo. That’s when he discloses he’s a Quaker!
Before the industrial revolution Spain was a leader in manufacturing quality goods, a leader in world trade and agriculture; yet within a few generations leadership in all this had passed to other countries in Europe. All big changes in the last 40 years. It is probably too long for the occassional traveler, but maybe useful for those wanting specific information about either a geography or cultural item. The book was published ibrria years ago when Franco was on the verge of giving up power.
What role bullfighting and flamenco play in contemporary Spain is probably open to question. It’s also really really really long, but I thought it was a relatively quick read – Michener is an excellent writer and brings his experiences to life.
Thus in the course of these pages jichener travels through nearly all of the country, both geographically and temporally, the only noticeable exception being the Basque Country.
