Just started this book today.
Not only for teaching, but for my own writing. As this book shows us, the effect can come first. There sometimes seem to be two extremes of grammar. Noden analyzes the grammar of stories, essays, non-fiction, and revision. I mean, I liked it, but what I really like are the books where it’s immediately evident to me how I can apply the ideas.
I’m excited to see what this text has to offer. Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read.

Image Grammar : Using Grammatical Structures to Teach Writing by Harry R. Noden
Ingalls finds that Noden, by expanding the relationship between parts of speech and writing and by providing vivid writing samples and creative writing exercises, helps us break out of our limited view of grammar. I find this section of the book more remote, not directly related to what my students need.
Beyond the wonderful mixture of samples, Noden varies his descriptions and analyses. Liz Shine rated it it was amazing Jun 21, I did not find as much use for this since I was teaching IB English 12, but I could see a good use for it in a creative writing class as well as other classes.

In pres For decades, scholars have urged teachers to integrate grammar and writing, yet few have provided teachers with enough strategies and materials to do so. I wanted to like it more than I did like it. Each chapter ends with five to eight activities that help students apply “new brush strokes” to their writing and to understand and appreciate various writing styles.
Although this book provides some interesting lessons, it is left up to the reader to contextualize these lessons so they are appropriate for the classroom.
