Up until she hears a premonition about the last dragon dying. People from around the country and globe start lining up on the borders ready to pounce. Two people tried to kill me, I was threatened with jail, had sixteen offers of marriage and was outlawed by King Snodd.
All the wizards and stuff that live there are so fun! Before I even got to know John Green, Jasper Fforde is the first author that can do no wrong in my book. I’d happily read it to my kid, or be pleased to see him reading it for himself. I wish the story had started on page and gone into much more detail about the conflict among the empires and the conflict between the dragons and the humans. Ahhh, I’d forgotten how much I love Fforde’s worldbuilding. You’ll find out more in Song of the Quarkbeast. The Last Dragonslayer is a good YA novel with a simplistic plot best suited for younger teens, but a whimsical style and satirical humor that is probably way over their heads.

Jennifer Strange is a fun, plucky protagonist, but she doesn’t have much by way of interiority or internal conflict: Magic has been on a steady decline for years now, and there were less and less jobs for them. In general though, I LOVED most of it, then it got scary, and then I just didn’t know what las do with the ending because it was so sudden and I didn’t care about some of the things.
Like many novels that are the first in a series, The Last Dragonslayer suffers from way too much attention spent on introducing a huge cast of characters most of whom play little or no part in the events of the rising action.
